Honda to scrap RA107?

Crisis-struck Honda will scrap its current single seater after next month's Monaco grand prix, according to British newspaper The Times. The Japanese squad has failed to power its flawed and Earth-liveried RA107 single seater above eleventh place in a grand prix so far.In Malaysia, Rubens Barrichello qualified nineteenth and behind both Super Aguris, which feature an identical engine and a chassis that is based on the works Honda of 2006.
The Times wrote: "So intractable are the issues that it is thought that the team will introduce a new car at the Canadian grand prix in Montreal ... that, according to one report, will be a complete revamp of the RA107 concept."It is believed, however, that even the new car is unlikely to return Honda to contention, despite team boss Nick Fry's continued assertion at Sepang that the objective for 2007 is "more than one" race win.But The Times, adding that part of the plan is to lure Ross Brawn for 2008, insists that the new Honda is "not so much to save this season but to get Honda on the right footing for next year and beyond."The newspaper also asserts that Fry wants to restructure Honda so that its personnel is not split between both Brackley (UK) and Tochigi (Japan).

Drivers welcome traction control ban

F1's drivers have generally welcomed the impending ban on traction control. The FIA confirmed last month that the electronic driver aid will not be allowed in 2008, after it was reintroduced to Formula One in 2001 following a previous ban that fell in 1993.

"I think it's going to be more fun," said Kimi Raikkonen, "although for sure it's going to make it more difficult to drive over the race distance, so it's not going to always be fun."The reintroduction of the ban has been made possible because of the standardisation of F1 cars' ECU, which will make it harder to illegally replicate traction control.

Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella described the ban as a 'good option' for the sport. "It's good to make it more difficult for the drivers," the Roman said."When I first drove in Formula One with no traction control it was more fun, more difficult because it's more in the hands of the drivers to judge the traction at the exit of the slow corners."

Veteran David Coulthard, however, played down the probable impact of the ban, insisting that the only noticeable difference might be in wet races.Indeed, it emerged recently that Super Aguri ran nearly the entire 2006 season without a traction control system - and almost no-one knew.
Coulthard said: "I think in dry conditions, the driver has an in-built traction control system and that won't change."

Williams' Nico Rosberg agrees that the impact of traction control is usually overestimated, arguing that with or without the system it is difficult to drive an F1 car."I think you still need to control (the car) yourself with the foot occasionally," he said, "so it is not going to make a huge difference."

But Renault test driver Nelson Piquet Jr, fresh out of GP2, observed that in F1's feeder series - where traction control is not allowed - there is usually more overtaking per race. He said a big part of the difference in quality between F1 and GP2 races 'is the driver controlling his foot on the accelerator' on the exit of corners, leading to more mistakes and more variable tyre wear in GP2.

Honda in talks with Ross Brawn

Honda Racing boss Nick Fry is in talks with Ross Brawn in a bid to convince Ferrari's former technical director to join the Japanese manufacturer, autosport.com can reveal.
On the back of Honda's disastrous start to their 2007 campaign, with the RA107 suffering from major aerodynamic problems, Fry is targeting Brawn as a key appointment to resurrect his team's fortunes in the long term.

Following the departure of then technical director Geoff Willis in the middle of last year, Honda Racing have lacked leadership from someone with extensive F1 design experience. Senior technical director Shuhei Nakamoto's background is in engine design and motorbike racing.

Brawn is currently on a sabbatical from Ferrari and, although he has promised to speak to the Maranello outfit before deciding his future, sources have revealed that the Briton has no contractual obligation to rejoin his old team.

That means Brawn is free to join any outfit from the start of 2008 and, it is understood, the Briton has expressed an interest in joining Honda. It is not clear, though, just how advanced the talks with the Brackley-based team have become.

Brawn has made no secret of the fact that he eventually wants to return to Britain, having worked at Ferrari since 1996, and the challenge of turning Honda into world championship contenders would certainly provide a suitable enough challenge to stimulate him.

Autosport.com understands that the discussions between Brawn and Fry began without the pre-approval of Honda's senior management, as Fry moved unilaterally in a bid to convince Brawn on a personal level.
When asked by autosport.com, Fry refused to confirm that talks were going on, but he fell short of denying it. He said: "I've got no comment to make on that."

However, Fry did later admit that the addition of a leading technical figure like Brawn would be a huge boost to his team.

"I think every team would benefit from Ross Brawn," he said. "Whether it be us or others, but I am sure Ross has some sort of arrangement with Ferrari, so we will see."

Brawn is clearly a big attraction for any F1 team, having guided Ferrari to world championship success from 2000 to 2004.

Despite taking a sabbatical this year, it is widely believed that Brawn does want to return to F1 - with his key interest likely to be in becoming team boss at Ferrari.
In the shorter term, Honda Racing are planning to introduce a new car for the Canadian Grand Prix in a bid to turnaround their season.

Although the new car will not officially be designated a B-spec, team insiders have told autosport.com that it will likely be a complete revamp of the RA107 concept. Work on the new car began after pre-season testing in Bahrain when the team first realised the difficulties they were in.

Fry would not confirm specific details of what was planned, but admitted that major upgrades were in the pipeline for Montreal. When asked by autosport.com how new the car would be, he said: "That's to be established at the moment. "We are working on a fairly extensive array of improvements but, at the moment, a lot of those are being worked on in the wind tunnel. "Clearly there is a limit in what you can do before Canada and we will do the maximum amount, but it will only be if it works.

"There is no point in changing things for the sake of it. We need to understand why we have the problems we do and make sure they are being properly addressed. "Changing bits of the car just to make ourselves feel good is not being very constructive, so there is a lot of work to be done."

Engine penalties for Coulthard and Barrichello

Red Bull’s David Coulthard and Honda’s Rubens Barrichello will start Sunday’s Malaysian Grand Prix from the back of the grid following unscheduled engine changes ahead of qualifying.
Barrichello hit problems with his race car at the start of Saturday’s session, forcing the Brazilian to switch to the spare RA107. Unfortunately the team did not have time to transfer his race engine, hence he incurs a ten-place grid penalty. As Barrichello only qualified 19th, the effect of his penalty is far less than Coulthard’s. The Scot had taken his RB3 to 13th spot, before it emerged that Red Bull had swapped him to a fresh Renault V8 before the session began.

Räikköselle EI moottorivaihtoa

Kimi Räikkösen Ferrari-autoon ei vaihdeta uutta moottoria Malesian GP-viikonloppua varten. Asian vahvisti tallipäällikkö Jean Todt.

- Testiemme jälkeen emme havainneet mitään sellaista, jonka takia meidän pitäisi muuttaa suunnitelmiamme tai vaihtaa moottoria, Todt sanoi.

Räikkösen moottorin suhteen oltiin ennen Malesian GP-viikonlopun alkua huolissaan, koska se ylikuumeni voitokkaassa Australian GP:ssä. Kuljettajien on ajettava kaksi peräkkäistä kisaviikonloppua samalla moottorilla. Moottorinvaihdosta olisi seurannut lähtöruutua pudottava rangaistus.
Räikkönen kokeili tiettävästi perjantaiharjoituksissa ajaa Ferrarillaan siten, että moottorin hevosvoimalukemia oli tarkoituksellisesti hieman rajoitettu. Näin suomalaiskuskille kertyi kokemusta siitä, minkälaiseen vauhtiin hän yltäisi moottorin kestävyyden suhteen varman päälle tehdyillä asetuksilla.

Heidfeld unfazed by expiring contract

Nick Heidfeld is not worried about renewing his contract with BMW-Sauber despite it expiring at the end of the season. He says it's all part of being a Formula One driver and he is just focusing on the job in hand.

"It does not make any difference to me," the 29-year-old told German magazine Auto Motor und Sport. "I've been in Formula One for several years now and been in this situation before. In any case, when I am on the track or sitting in the car I don't think at all about this kind of thing except doing my best."

BMW-Sauber's Sebastian Vettel has impressed in Friday practice sessions and looks set for a promising career. Although BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen had no qualms about ousting more experienced Jacques Villeneuve for hot prospect Robert Kubica last season, Nick Heidfeld simply said "no" as to whether he was afraid of being replaced by his young compatriot. Instead, Heidfeld is looking to establish himself as one of the top drivers at the pinnacle of motorsport and believes that BMW offers him the best opportunity of doing that.

When asked about stepping into Michael Schumacher's shoes as the best German driver, he said: "I think that all German drivers have that as their aim. But it naturally depends on how good the team is. At the moment it looks like I am with the best team with BMW-Sauber. Therefore I am in the best position."But for me it is insignificant," he added. "I don't want to be the best German but the best of all."

F1 stats for Malaysian GP

Hamilton
Briton Lewis Hamilton's third place for McLaren in the Australian season-opener made him the first rookie since Canadian Jacques Villeneuve in 1996 to stand on the podium after his first Grand Prix.

The 22-year-old was also the 55th to score points on his debut.
The last driver to win a race in his rookie season was Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya with Williams in Italy in 2001.

Race wins
Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen claimed his 10th victory in Melbourne. That elevated him to third in the list of most successful current drivers, behind Alonso (15) and Briton David Coulthard (13).

Ferrari's now-retired seven times champion Michael Schumacher holds the record of 91 wins.
Raikkonen has twice before won two races in a row - in 2005 when he triumphed in Spain and then Monaco before wins in Hungary and Turkey.

Ferrari last won the opening two races of the season with Schumacher in 2004. Raikkonen had never before started a season with a win.

The last Ferrari driver to lead the championship was Schumacher, last season.

Constructors
Raikkonen's victory dashed Renault's hopes of a hat-trick of season-opening wins.

The French team won in Melbourne in 2005 with Italian Giancarlo Fisichella and in Bahrain in 2006 with Alonso.

Renault have also won in Malaysia for the past two seasons.

McLaren have not won a race since October 2005, when Raikkonen triumphed for them in Japan. Williams's last victory was with Montoya in Brazil in October 2004.

Ferrari have now won 193 races, McLaren 148 and Williams 113. Renault have won 33. Two teams, Super Aguri and Spyker, have yet to score points in F1.

Malaysia
Ferrari have the best record in Malaysia since the first race at Sepang in 1999. The Italian team have won there four times.

Alex Yoong is the only Malaysian driver to have raced in F1.

Milestone
Red Bull's Coulthard, the oldest driver on the F1 starting grid, has celebrated his 36th birthday since the Melbourne season-opener.

Gold Coast could lure Australian GP

A planned $650 million Formula One-style circuit near Australia's famous Gold Coast could pose a real challenge to the status of the current Grand Prix in Melbourne.Local media sources say the proposed 6km track at Nowell, to be penned by renowned F1 circuit designer Hermann Tilke subject to a government land planning review, would be equipped with infrastructure for night racing; a concept being championed for the region by Bernie Ecclestone. The news of Queensland's possible bid for the Australian Grand Prix comes after a sustained period of criticism about the cost of the Melbourne race within the rival state of Victoria.

"If Mr Ecclestone decides that Queensland is a better place to host a Formula One race, then that's where it will go," Australian Grand Prix Corporation chairman Ron Walker told the Herald Sun newspaper. The Gold Coast project is being headed by Ron Brown, who intends the site to also host Australia's round of the World Rally championship next year.He said: "We are not about stealing events from people, but if the Grand Prix people want to talk then we would welcome that."

Fisichella defends Kovalainen

Giancarlo Fisichella has come to Heikki Kovalainen's defence after the rookie teammate's disastrous F1 debut.
Renault boss Flavio Briatore was scathing in his criticism of 25-year-old Kovalainen's performance in the Australian Grand Prix, but veteran Fisichella said the R27 car made it "easy" to make mistakes at Albert Park.

"I don't judge what Briatore said because he is the boss and he had a better view of (Kovalainen's) race than I did," Italian Fisichella said.
"For sure he had his reasons for saying those things," he added.
"But I have to say that it was a tough race, we had a difficult time driving the car, so it was easy to make mistakes," said Fisichella.
"Let's not forget it was (Kovalainen's) first race," he said.
"He is a good driver but lacking in experience, so - spiritually - I feel a bit like the number one," said Fisichella.
Fisichella, 34, warned Renault's fans that the reigning world champion team is unlikely to rapidly catch the pacesetters in 2007.

"Being realistic, I think it will be tough for us to win this season," he said.
"It won't be easy to recover this deficit. We are lacking downforce, we are lacking a lot of grip,"

He explained that the French squad's biggest pre-season problem was struggling to understand the characteristics of Bridgestone's new tyre while developing the 2007 car in the wind tunnel.
Fisichella continued, "Now we understand some more so we're hoping to put together a better aero package and move forward."

De la Rosa: Kimi's a party animal

Pedro de la Rosa has defended former McLaren colleague Kimi Raikkonen's partying ways.
Referring to the Finn's off-track reputation for occasionally enjoying one too many alcoholic beverages, de la Rosa told a men's magazine that the media's portrayal of 27-year-old Raikkonen has been "exaggerated".

"He likes to have a good time, perhaps even more than the rest of us," said Spaniard de la Rosa, 36, who worked alongside Raikkonen as a test driver at McLaren until the Finn switched to Ferrari for 2007.
He told FHM, "But what is written (about Raikkonen) is too much."

Alonso referring to Raikkonen, his Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa told a Brazilian newspaper earlier this year, "In a world like ours, where there are famous people, the media can often exaggerate or even make things up."

Räikkönen still concerned over engine

Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen has admitted there are still fears over whether the engine he used in Australia will make it through the forthcoming Malaysian Grand Prix weekend.

Raikkonen cruised to victory in the Melbourne season-opener, but not before a late water leak had caused the engine temperature on his F2007 to rise, prompting unease over its potential durability in the searing heat at Sepang.

"There is some concern,” Raikkonen told the official Ferrari website. “We had a slight leakage of water during the last part of the race and the team told me to slow down, writing 'Cool' on the sign next to the pit lane, as the radio didn't work because of a problem with a plug.

”The engine has since undergone checks and simulations tests back at the Ferrari factory. Armed with the resulting data, the team’s engineers will have to make a late call following Friday practice in Malaysia as to whether they risk using the engine, or swallow a ten-place grid penalty and substitute a fresh V8.

“Obviously we hope that the engine will make it through the whole weekend and that we don't have to change it before the qualifying,” added Raikkonen. “In case we had to change it, obviously it would be a bit different for us: everything would be much more difficult.”Raikkonen’s team mate Felipe Massa started from the back of the grid in Australia after the team changed his engine. The Brazilian subsequently fought his way up to sixth place.

Uusi merkkaustapa rengasseoksille

Kauden avauskisassa Australian GP:ssä pehmeämpi rengasseos merkittiin renkaan ulkoreunaan maalatulla valkoisella täplällä, joka ei kuitenkaan näkynyt kunnolla autojen liikkuessa.
Sepangin tämänviikkoisissa testeissä Bridgestone testasi uudenlaista merkitsemistapaa maalaamalla kussakin renkaassa yhden uran valkoiseksi. Valkoinen ura erottui selvästi aiempaa ratkaisua paremmin autoja edestäpäin katsottaessa.

Luistonesto kielletty kaudella 2008

Kansainvälinen autoliitto FIA vahvisti perjantaina, että F1-autoissa kielletään renkaiden luistonesto kaudesta 2008 lähtien.
Nykyisin siviiliautoistakin tuttu luistonesto ehkäisee renkaiden sutimista ja tekee ajoneuvosta helpommin ohjattavan erityisesti märällä kelillä.
Edellisen kerran luistonesto oli F1-sarjassa kiellettynä vuosina 1994-2000. Tuolloin kuljettajien ajotaidon korostamiseksi käyttöönotettu kielto peruttiin valvonnan vaikeuden takia. Ensi kaudella F1-autojen elektroniikkaydin on tarkoitus standardoida, jolloin huijauksen mahdollisuus vähenee.
- Kaikki pyörän sutimista estävät järjestelmät ja laitteet tulevat olemaan kiellettyjä ensi kaudesta lähtien FIA tiedotti.
